Remember: Remember Toronto is Tomorrow Night

Tomorrow night, Sunday May 24, will be a very special night at the weekly Wavelength music series.

Back in late 2007, we presented an event called "Remember Toronto" which also celebrated the launch of Coach House Books' "GreenTOpia" anthology. That was an amazing, packed night of all Toronto artists covering all Toronto songs. After that, we decided to make RT events an ongoing phenomenon.

Remember Toronto II is subtitled "Bands Reunited" and, as the name suggests, the night will feature sets by reunited Toronto indie bands from our formative years — the 1990s and early 2000's.

Grasshopper (1991-96) — Led by Derek Madison a.k.a. Grasshopper, these guys were Toronto's stoner-grunge heroes, purveyors of noise-glazed hits like "Born Loser," "Neptune," "Downlow" and "Novocain." They were so cool they made friends with the guys from Ween, and put out a seven-inch where they all hung out together for the cover pic!

The Electric Shoes (2000-04) — Before Proof of Ghosts, Steve Shoe fronted this bubblegummy fuzz-pop band out of Oshawa. Drummer Phoebe went on to co-found The Diableros. They briefly changed their name to Prom Night Suicide Pact, but to us they'll always be the Electric Shoes.

Kat Rocket (1993-2001) — This Willowdale crew were like a countrified Pavement, with core members Stella Panacci and Darren Donaghey writing tons of classics like “Slacker Boy Blue” and "Winter's Greeting." Other former Kat Rocketeers went on to join Broken Social Scene and Danko Jones.

Tigerbomb (1995-2003) — Before Mason Hornet, before The Phoenix Lights Band or Secret Japanese Girlfriend and before we started Wavelength, Doc Pickles met some guys named Emmit and Kalin and they had a lot of fun with a 4-track.

Now what's incredible —or disturbing — is that many of our crowd is too young to remember these bands at all! So we hope that this show will be as much as educational experience as a shameless exercise in nostalgia.

And, speaking of shameless, tomorrow also marks the date of birth of yours truly. So come out and have a drink with me. My friends Brendan and Deirdre are DJing and they have promised to play me all my favourite songs ever.
