Wavelength Presents: A Vewy Special Summew
By wavelength ~ Posted Thursday, July 16th 2009Following up on the atmospheric awesomeness that was Magik Markers in the Music Gallery Courtyard...
— and if you don't believe me, watch this:
... Wavelength is pleased to announce three more amazing, exciting, life-affirming, so-transcendentally-moving-you'll-withdraw-all-your-savings-and-move-to-a-monastery-where-they-only-play-indie-music type Special Events to take us through the end of Summer. Oh, Summer, why must we see your end already?
Next Sunday (July 26), Wavelength is teaming up with the nice people at P.S. Kensington to present an afternoon "stage" of our some of our favourite Toronto bands at the monthly summer Pedestrian Sundays throw-down in Kensington Market.... though this "stage" will consist of the street itself! We'll be setting up in the middle of Augusta Avenue, just south of College. The bands include soul-metal lovers Lullabye Arkestra, skronky/wonky popsters The Guest Bedroom, hip-hop true believer Mindbender, jazz-folk free-spirit Isla Craig... and yrs truly's new band, Danger Bay.
Then on Saturday August 15 — UPDATE: Postponed to Oct. 17 due to municipal worker's strike — Wavelength presents ALL CAPS! on the Island... the next phase in evolution of the annual ALL CAPS! Outdoors Show.... "Yeah, we know" there's a municipal worker's strike on, and if there's no end in sight, we will be postponing this event until a later date. But you got to have faith that both sides can work it out (I know, that's a real leap of faith right now) and everything will go according to plan: we're working together with the good people of Gibralar Point Centre for the Arts to create a whole afternoon of music and art exhibits, with an amazing line-up of local bands playing in and around the Centre, as well as some cool site-specific locales... stay tuned, and don't stop believin'!
And then.... Saturday Sept. 12, Wavelength presents your antidote to TIFF-induced nausea... and that is the Toronto debut of Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex.... you read that right! The King of the Ethiopian Saxophone performing live with the pioneers of Dutch art-punk. Anyone who has seen The Ex knows the ecstatic awesomeness that is their live show, and anyone who doesn't know what they're in store for should check out Getatchew & The Ex's amazing '06 collaboration, Moa Anbessa. Or just watch this!
We're not afraid to declare this the Show of the Year, and it's made even sweeter by the fact that Toronto's own Brodie West is a part of the band... and that, as an added bonus, Daniel Nebiat will open the show. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday, at Soundscapes, Rotate and Ticketweb.
