Immaculate Machine
By wavelength ~ Posted Thursday, July 1st 2004Victoria, B.C. pop trio Immaculate Machine played Wavelength last August during our zine hiatus, and the mutual love was so strong we both wanted each other back. Outoftheshine did IM's first Wavelength interview, for their second Wavelength appearance, this July 18th:
First off, who are you? What are you out to accomplish? What are the roles of your band members aside from the instruments that they play? (ie: who drives? does merch? etc.) We are Kathryn Calder, Brooke Gallupe and Luke Kozlowski. We're trying to write music that we like. Simply. Everyone is involved in most of the important processes, from songwriting to those long, long drives to writing these responses.
One of the first things I noticed when I listened to your band is that you're playing straight up melodic rock music without any silly genre titles associated with the music. Who are some of the bands people compare you to? Is there a difference between the comparison bands and your influences? The comparisons vary, but a lot involve new wave bands like Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Blondie, Police... There are some cheap comparisons because of our line-up, with the keyboards and no bass player, but on the whole we're happy to be compared to those bands.
From coast to coast is a long friggin' way. Any interesting road stories? We played a show in Halifax at a converted basement turned café called Salvation. The highlight of the night was when the cops came during our last song and threatened to arrest people if they didn't leave within five minutes. So what if Salvation was illegally selling booze, and the owner was shaking a broom and swearing at the police? So what if it was past midnight and there was no proper insulation, therefore violating noise bylaws? This put the enthusiastic audience in a bit of a pickle. Buy merchandise or get arrested? Which one would you choose?
What album gets the vote for 'œplayed most in the van on tour'?? Mostly bands we've played with, but the moooost most: Pet Sounds.
What do you like best about playing in or around Toronto? Is it true that your entire band has moved here for a short period of time? What is the story behind that? We will be moving to Toronto for July and August, because we have a good sublet opportunity and we can tour back home in the fall. Toronto seems amazing so far: lots of venues, music, culture... We may get tired of the smog eventually, but you never know.
What do you hope people will think of when they listen to your Transporter LP? We're hoping that people will find it to be something new and refreshing. Maybe something to dance around their living room when you think no one is watching. Some strange compliments we've received: 'œWow, I like it, but I just don't get what you're trying to do,'? and 'œI don't usually like music, but I love you guys!'?
