Building Castles Out of Matchsticks

Anne Sulikowski is one interesting girl. By day she runs her own radio show at CFMU, reads Philip K. Dick and listens to music non-stop. By night she analyzes brainwaves at a sleep clinic. She usually wakes up at 3:00pm. She likes dark rum, reggae music and castles. She also like Poland, where there are apparently eight national radio stations, each one a different genre of music. Anne chatted with our own Jam Butty.

L'esprit d'escalier is a French expression. It directly translates to 'œthe devil of the stairwell.'? It's supposed to signify the way YOU feel when you leave your boyfriend's apartment, after he's called you a 'œlazy bitch'? or something. In reality, you say something like, 'œYeah? Well... fuck you!'? and you walk out the door. But then your imagination kicks in, and you come up with a dozen wittier and more damning retorts than what you actually said. And usually, the imaginary argument (where you win) seems way more real than the real argument (where you lose). This happens to me a lot. Have you had any nasty situations like that?

Boy, do I have a story for you. About four years ago, I was dating this musician. We were living together. I was jamming all the time, playing in jazz bands, noise bands, um... a surf rock band, some improv stuff too. And he started to get jealous with how much music I was playing. We were both keyboard players, but he wasn't playing with any bands. So eventually, we had this horrible break-up. He kicked me out of my own apartment and didn't even let me grab any of my things. I came back two days later and he was furious, like, he didn't even want me to pick up my own stuff! From my own apartment! And you know what he did? He poured water all over my equipment, like my Moog and some other vintage keyboards, totally ruining them. I tried to get out of there as fast as possible. I was able to save my computer and one keyboard, my Roland JP8000, which I later sold. I didn't even get any of my clothes back. Anyways, as I was leaving, I thought, 'œThat dude lost so hardcore.'? He was kind of a loser, nobody really liked him, and he wasn't going anywhere.

My regret about that situation is that I didn't leave earlier in the relationship before things got crazy. Or I should've climbed in a window or something'¦ I really wish I had gotten my clothes, which I loved, or my Farfisa. The positive thing about that situation was that four years later, I'm still jamming more than ever, making more music than I ever have. That whole situation was kind of how Building Castles Out Of Matchsticks got their name.
