Doers
By wavelength ~ Posted Wednesday, October 27th 2004The Doers take their name seriously. They're all about action, and their intense tour schedule proves it (see question #5). They also recently made John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List, and their website describes their music as 'œan acoustic, three-piece-folk-punk-soft-math-rock band with a pleasant smell and a firm handshake.'? The quality of the handshake remains unconfirmed, but Barry Higginson openly disputes the smell claim. He took a moment to answer Sarah Kolasky's questions (but refused to tell her a dirty joke).
From where are you writing this email? Hi, this is Barry of the bass and we're in Calgary, Alberta. I'm at the Alexander something-or-other branch of the Calgary library system.
Who are the other Doers and what do they do? Sean is the guitarist and vocalist, Jeff is the drummer, and Sarah Jane is our support singer.
What have The Doers accomplished so far today? We've just finished 12 shows in 12 days and today we have slept a bunch and taken the tour van in for last minute repairs.
Describe your tour van. What's the atmosphere like? We're in an import mini-van. It is packed solid Tetris-puzzle-style and Sarah Jane keeps us laughing so hard we almost crash.
You have just embarked on a cross-country tour of 50 shows in two months. Wavelength is 37th on the list. What will you have to offer us when you make it here? Well, it's difficult to see into the future but we will have songs newer than those on our record, we should be much better at performing the old ones and we should be pretty smelly. Hey, maybe we won't even make it! Ha.
Any great tour stories so far? In Victoria, B.C., we crashed at Carolyn Mark's house while she was out of town, and all the bedding and floor space was occupied by other freeloading musicians, so I went to sleep on her beautiful giant dining table. I awoke at dawn shaking like a bowl of jell-o from cold and warmed myself up in front of the open oven at 350 degrees, then nodded off and was caught on camera by our friend Deon, much to everyone's delight for days.
Do you think there is a lack of young people pursuing their dreams nowadays? Actually, I am always encouraged by the number of good young bands in the places we visit. I was very impressed by the interest in politics I saw in the youth of Newfoundland... However, the straightest answer I can offer is: unless all young people are pursuing their dreams, there is a lack.
How long have you guys been together? What keeps you together? The Doers have been doing for a couple of years now but Jeff, Sean, and I have played music together much longer. We stay together because we share one brain and drink beer.
If you were each a different part of a large sandwich, who would be what? Why? Jeff (being the drummer) would definitely be the bread '” fresh rye or sourdough; Sean, who has written the bulk of our songs so far, is the corned beef, layered thick, New York deli style; and I am the condiments and the cheese (an exotic Dijon mustard and a sharp Swiss or cheddar) for flavour. Sarah Jane, the most recent addition, is the refreshing lettuce and tomato, naturally the last items to go on a large sandwich.
