Frank FB_A

If Wavelength was Tiger Beat, 13-year-old Charlie Fenton would be its star pin-up. He's in Frank FB_A, along with Andrew Wilson, Nick Bartram and older brother Chris Wright. They've got one tape out on Consumption Records by the name of Frankster, and are set to release their first full-length CD, I Pity Da Fool. Using the magic of technology, Shaunna Bednarek was able to talk on the phone with both Charlie from his home in Toronto and Chris from his temporary home in New York City at the same time.

DOES "FRANK FB_A" SERVE AS CHARLIE'S STAGE NAME, THE BAND'S NAME, OR BOTH? Charlie: It's the band's name... When they called me "Frank" in that review they did in Now, it was kind of weird. I think they actually thought my name was Frank. Chris: Frank FB_A is kinda his persona when he's onstage... We all take on a persona.

AND, CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, "FRANK FB_A" WAS ALSO THE NAME OF A DRAWING CHARLIE MADE AS A KID? Charlie: When I was probably about six or seven, I drew a picture of this guy holding a hot dog. I was trying to write "frankfurter," but I kept messing it up. I took, like, five pages trying to write "frankfurter," and on one of them I put "Frank FB_A." Chris: The B and the A were kind of attached... You kind of screwed up on that drawing, but in a cool way. Charlie: We probably should've kept the drawing.

HOW DID THE WHOLE THING HAPPEN WITH CONSUMPTION RECORDS? Chris: My friend asked me to be in her zine... In that same zine, I was reading an article by Matias Rozenberg of The Hidden Cameras, who I didn't know at the time, but I was a big fan of [the group]... In his article he went on to talk about this idea he had for a record label, which sounded like the coolest idea ever. To make music for art, not for money, and with recycled materials. And I had all these tapes from when I was six years old, playing music with my dad and my guitar, singing made-up words. I also had these tapes with Charlie... those were the tapes that appealed the most to Matias.

MY COPY OF THE FRANKSTER EP WAS DUBBED OVER A SKINNY PUPPY TAPE. WHAT OTHER TAPES HAVE YOU BEEN RECORDED OVER? Charlie: Wasn't one of them Van Halen or something? Chris: Van Halen - 1984... The Best of The Commodores... Prince... Enigma - The Age of Innocence.

FUNNY THAT YOU MENTIONED VAN HALEN, A BAND WITH BROTHERS IN IT. ARE THERE ANY OTHER "SIBLING BANDS" THAT YOU GUYS IDENTIFY WITH? Charlie:
AC/DC! Chris: Charlie kind of has this special kinship with AC/DC. I like the fact that you mention AC/DC because it's a band with a legacy. They've been going on for decades. That's a good thing, as opposed to saying that we relate more to the Nelson brothers... or Hanson. Charlie: Or The Moffatts!

YOUR MOM ALSO PLAYS A PART IN THE BAND - AS CHARLIE'S CHAPERONE WHEN YOU GUYS PLAY BARS. HOW'S THAT FOR YOU GUYS? Chris: It seemed to make Charlie more uncomfortable earlier on. He's gotten more comfortable with that because she's come so many times. Her being there, we've had no problems with [venues]. We play some all-ages venues and she still comes because she wants to support us, so it's not just an obligation, either.

I KNOW THAT YOU DRINK A LOT OF COKE BEFORE YOUR SHOWS, CHARLIE. WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR RIDER? Charlie: I need 12 ice-cold cans of Coke in a cooler, ten very nice bendy straws... Pizza Pizza pizza, either pepperoni or bacon double cheeseburger. A medium box with a small pizza inside. No vegetables whatsoever. Lots of Skittles, jawbreakers and gum, just to make me extra-hyped.

ANY TRUTH TO THE RUMOUR THAT FRANK FB_A WILL SOON BE DISBANDING? Charlie:
No! We will never disband! Chris: We are family, like Sister Sledge. And you couldn't break up them, unless it was with a sledgehammer.
