The Letlowns
By wavelength ~ Posted Saturday, December 4th 2004I just watched the Greatest Duos in Music History installment of MuchMoreMusic's Listed program. Who makes these lists? And how do I get to be one of those talking heads? Sometimes I still can't resign myself to mainstream orthodoxy, to simply accept that Godheadsilo, Mach Tiver and Autechre just won't appear alongside Daft Punk, the Pet Shop Boys and Wham! That Eric B. and Rakim may always lose out to DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and that I may be alone in thinking the White Stripes are total garbage. But hey, who needs TV, we can make our own Greatest Duos in Underground Music History list, and put it on the Internet! Or, let's not. How about we ponder the unfettered purity of one-on-one interplay and consider a new addition to the duo-verse, the Let Lowns. This pair hail from Montreal, offer up a joyful guitar-drums sound, and have affiliations with Blue Skies Turn Black bands like Les Angles Morts, Kiss Me Deadly and Lae-Tseu.
WHO ARE YOU AND HOW DO YOU SAY YOUR NAME? (DOES IT RHYME WITH "LET DOWNS" OR ARE YOU REALLY THE "LET LOANS"?) Let Lowns rhymes with letdowns, although a native French speaker might indeed pronounce it Let Loans, and that's OK. My name is Victoria. Brendan is the master behind the drums.
THERE'S JUST TWO OF YOU - HOW DO YOU DO IT ALL? We've wavered between being a two-piece to a three-piece to a two-piece to a three-piece, and now we are a two-piece again, and it feels pretty right. Besides, we have to make the band work as a duo, because it's just so nice to fit into a station wagon.
LET'S TALK ABOUT POLVO FOR A MINUTE. YOUR SONGS MAKE ME THINK OF POLVO AND HOW MUCH I MISS THEM, AND BANDS LIKE THEM. CAN WE TALK ABOUT POLVO FOR A MINUTE? Polvo - wasn't Ash Bowie in that band? I went through a serious Helium phase two years ago. Wasn't Ash Bowie in that band? (JD: Yes, he certainly was, and his electric bass guitar playing was amazing. Definitely more than just Mary Timony's boytoy. As for Polvo, someone once said watching them was like watching the Guitar Olympics, and it's true. You don't see much in the way of well-thought-out guitar explorations like that anymore, and I don't know why it's so passΘ. I mean, their heyday was only, what, 10 years ago? Anyways, if you're reading this and curious, keep an eye out for any of Polvo's releases between 1992-95 on Merge. That shit is still so fresh, and no one's gone past it yet. The lovely Internet is letting me down in terms of finding out what those boys are up to now - though there is a hilarious interview with Dave Brylawski's Mom on the Matador site - so if you've got any news, hit me up with it. But I really do digress.)
TOURING: HOW DO YOU GUYS FEEL ABOUT IT? Touring is kind of like calling up people you don't really know and inviting yourself over to have a party. Sometimes it goes over well. Sometimes you don't really feel welcome. When the former comes true, touring is awesome.
MONTREAL: WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT IT? We wish people had tags on them. There are many things you can write on a tag. For example: "English," "French," or "Don't Talk to Me."
