THE GHOST IS DANCING
By wavelength ~ Posted Thursday, August 4th 2005The Ghost Is Dancing are a serious amalgamation of myth and fact, to be seen and heard but not yet fathomed. True, they come from Niagara Falls and Toronto, and they sort of resemble other '˜symphonic' indie rock bands out there. But, as their bio states, the band formed in 2009, and have travelled back in time, to help save the world with rock '˜n' roll. And their music has a surging, aggressive energy that sets them apart, and a strange confidence, as if they really knew their destiny. Demian met most of the band at a Wavelength and then did an e-mail questionnaire thing.
HOW'S IT GOING? ARE YOU HAVING A GOOD SUMMER?
KEVIN: Good, for all of the above. Thank you for asking. How about yourself?
ERIC: My summer is nice. My left arm has a tan and my right arm doesn't.
ODIE: Yes! Things are wicked. I've been able to rack up a pretty amazing tan so far.
HOW'S THE NEW EP GOING? HOW WAS THE STUDIO EXPERIENCE?
JIM: The studio experience was a lot of fun. Really long hours, but in a very good way.
JAMIE: The EP is growing, it's turning into a monster. We thought we were done and now we're adding more tracks to it.
ODIE: I think in a lot of ways we're a much better band than we were before we went in. We're all still pretty new to this whole band thingy and for most of us it was the first time in a studio.
A BUNCH OF YOU JUST GOT BACK FROM A VAN TRIP TO THE INTONATION FEST IN CHICAGO. ANY ROAD STORIES, OR MUSICAL OR CULTURAL EXPERIENCES WORTH SHARING?
KEVIN: Intonation was a lot of fun, lots of awesome bands playing and a lot of great people. The Go! Team blew me away; we're gonna have to rip some of that off.
ODIE: Tim Harrington [Les Savy Fav] and I traded hats and he wore my hat on stage! Other than that it was pretty hot and I tried to dance a lot'¦ America is just weird. Most of the people we met were amazingly nice to us. Like we'd find random people to talk to on the subway, or that would dance or sing with us.
YOUR BAND NAME EVOKES EVERYTHING FROM BENDY SKELETONS HUNG ON DOORS AT HALLOWEEN, TO MUSIC REVIVING A '˜SPIRIT' IN INDIE KIDS AND CONCERT GOERS, AND EVEN ROUSING THE DEAD TO START DANCING.
JIM: I think we're trying to appeal more to the fun side of the imagery you've just mentioned. It's like happy dark. Ghosts can be happy, right?
ERIC: We just Googled horse names. Those ideas are so good, we're going to use them in interviews from now on. The name is also how Native Americans refer to the northern lights.
ALSO, ARE YOU GUYS SOME KIND OF PHANTOMS?
ODIE: No. We are ghosts.
JAMIE: Odie was a crocodile hunter in a former life, that's all I know.
ERIC: We're from the future, bitch. Ghosts can't travel through time.
KEVIN: We're kinda like the cartoon Captain Planet. We each have our own ring, and when there's trouble a brewing we put the rings together to form Captain Planet.
JAMIE: Being close friends for so long is our superpower. We trust each other and believe in each other, and we can also grope each other on stage without feeling violated.
HOW DO THE INDIVIDUAL VOICES COME TOGETHER IN A SEVEN PIECE BAND? WOULD YOU SAY THAT CHAOS IS A DRIVING/ DEFINING ELEMENT OF YOUR MUSIC?
JAMIE: I think we go for a swarmy unpredictability, or something.
JIM: Chaos is definitely a driving force. It's amazing to see something chaotic work.
ERIC: We also love the fun/chaotic aspect of music and bands with a lot of energy and performance onstage.
JAMIE: There's seven of us, and we all have very different loves - from french folk to noise. We have the attitude of constant evolution. The assumed individual hero is both dead and a sham; it's the collective that's alive. We're mostly a decentralized socialist society.
