Dog Day

Why does everyone keep talking about Dog Day as a 'œcouples band'?? Sure, it's comprised of two couples, but to focus on that is to miss the point entirely. Dog Day, containing members of The Burdocks and The Hold, is making some excellent music. Yeah it's from Halifax, and yeah it's pop, but it's not the expected 'œHalifax Pop'?. They released an EP, Thank You, and they've not got an awesome, quaint lo-fi video for the song 'œUse Your Powers'?, which you can download on their website (www.dogdaymusic.com). Shaunna Bednarek talked to some of the members about the video and those little dogs that people carry around in bags.

I JUST ADDED YOU GUYS AS MY FRIEND ON MYSPACE.COM. HAVE YOU BEEN USING THIS WEBSITE ACTIVELY AS A TOOL TO RECRUIT STRANGERS TO LISTEN TO YOUR BAND? HOW'S THAT WORKING OUT FOR YOU?

SETH: It's nice for networking or keeping in touch with friends. The audio streaming is pretty functional. I like checking out bands and seeing what they're up to. I don't use it as a marketing tool.
NANCY: MySpace is funny. What we do with it is not very creepy.
CRYSTAL: I've haven't done much of that creepy internet stuff since the heyday of Friendster. But, I agree with Seth. I really like the ability to post songs and check out other bands without going through search engines to find their sites. That said, I think it's pretty important to have a website and not rely on MySpace for ALL of your networking/band promotion.

YOU GUYS JUST SHOT A MUSIC VIDEO THAT YOU'RE TRYING TO GET ON MOD (MUCH ON DEMAND). HOW DID THAT GO?

S: We wrote it and shot it in about 4 hours on a nice sunny day and added some live footage at the end. Casey had been doing a lot of independent shorts and is pretty handy with a camera. We basically did it for something fun to do. I don't think many people get it. I think it turned out to be too lo-fi looking for MuchMusic to play.
N: We don't know really because we don't have cable.
C: They did it all while I was at work. I really like the video, but it is probably too lo-fi to be aired.

ALL OF YOU GUYS SEEM TO HAVE COME TOGETHER FROM DIFFERENT BANDS. ARE YOU GUYS ACTIVELY PURSUING MUSICAL PROJECTS OUTSIDE OF DOG DAY THESE DAYS?

S: Our passions for The Burdocks and The Hold are still going strong. We tend to go on little sprints from one band to the next, kinda like a relay race. It's refreshing. All the bands are so diverse that it keeps us from getting bored of music entirely.
C: Seth handled this one very well. The relay race analogy is a great one. The Hold just got back from a short tour and when we return, it's The Burdocks' turn.

IF THERE WAS TO BE AN INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY, WHAT DAY WOULD IT BE AND WHAT WOULD PEOPLE DO?

S: It would be on the hottest day of the summer and people would have to crawl around on all fours and licking and biting each other all day.
N: Christmas day is a pretty good day to be a dog, I think.
C: Would it be a day to celebrate dogs or a day to dress up as a dog? I'm not sure. Maybe a bit of both. Take away all cars and let the dogs run all over the cities (especially the parks) and enjoy life to the fullest. There should be lots of balls and frisbees.

WHO ARE YOUR MAIN DAWGZ IN HALIFAX?

S: The Divorce crew, The OOT, Youth Club, J ma Fuckin' F, Dependent....
C: I'm not sure I'm hip enough to understand the question. Would you even know my friends, or are you asking about our affiliations? Since I don't even know some of who Seth listed off, my answer will be the Divorce crew, Out Of Touch, the Hunter Street Party Association, Drock'¦.

ITTY BITTY TEENIE WEENIE PURSE-SIZE DOGS ARE THE ACCESSORY DU JOUR AMONG THE YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL IN HOLLYWOOD. ANY FAVOURITE CELEBRITY DOGS?

S: I like most of the dogs in commercials. They have CGI on them.
C: This trend unnerves and/or enrages me. I don't like those little purse dogs at all. Not because of the breed (although it's not one I would personally choose) but because it's such a trend and these poor dogs are being treated as accessories. They're brought along
everywhere, no doubt prodded at by everyone, and have to endure all the flashes from the paparazzi. The poor things aren't even allowed to walk. My favourite celebrity dog (right now and off the top of my head) would have to be Mary-Kate Olsen's dog. It's big and shaggy and she walks it around town on a leash like a normal person.
