Proof of Ghosts
By wavelength ~ Posted Thursday, December 1st 2005Steve Shoe is a sound guy and Sneaky Dee's regular. You may remember him as the front man for the amazing band The Electric Shoes, which late became Prom Night Suicide Pact, part of the crew that did the Suck My Disc shows/compilations. Shoe is now fronting a new project called Proof of Ghosts, which will grace the Wavelength stage on December 18th. Shaunna Bednarek picked his brain over email.
GIVE US A BACK STORY OF THE BAND, ITS MEMBERS, AND HOW Y'ALL CAME TO BE.
Let's see, on the 18th I'll be playing with Keith and Mike from the Postage Stamps, but Proof of Ghosts is just me, really, and whoever I can wrangle into playing with me. I've done a few shows with just a guitar or a banjo, and I guess I'll do more that way.
As for the back-story, I've been recording for about a year, just after my last band broke up, and so I'll be releasing two records (the first should be ready by the show) that are basically the result of spending too many hours in a basement out of the sun. I've learned many things, not least of which is that I should not produce my own records in the future. I think I re-recorded every track at least a dozen times. But if the end justifies the means, then I guess all the summer sun I missed is worth it; I'm really happy with what I've got.
YOU'RE USUALLY THE ONE IN THE SOUND BOOTH DURING WAVELENGTH. IS IT GOING TO BE WEIRD TO BE ON STAGE INSTEAD?
No, I've played Wavelength before, though this will be the first time playing any of these songs with a band. You know, I always feel "weird" when I wind up on stage with people listening to and watching me. Then I feel that I have to be witty and entertaining, and really, stage banter is something I'd rather leave to someone else. I need to get a funny member who I can work off; who can pull off that kind of Evan Griffith to Maggie MacDonald hilarity.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON WORKING THE SOUNDBOOTH DURING WAVELENGTH IN GENERAL? IS IT SOMETHING YOU MOSTLY ENJOY DOING, OR IS IT MORE OF A HASSLE? BE HONEST!
Yeah, of course. I mean, I get to see all kinds of bands, and you Wavelength people are usually pretty nice.
SINCE YOU WORK AT SNEAKY DEE'S, DO YOU GET EXTRA BEER TICKETS?
Yeah, you wanna split them and keep it as our secret?
YOU'RE PLAYING WITH THE RUSSIAN FUTURISTS THAT NIGHT, WHO ARE TOTALLY AWESOME. WHO ARE SOME OTHER WICKED BANDS YOU'VE SHARED THE STAGE WITH?
I remember some years ago, doing vocals in Black Cat 13 and touring with the Locust, I got to play with bands like Out Hud and Black Dice. Then of course there's Anagram, Another Blue Door and all those ex-Oshawa guys. I like Peter Charmichael's new band the Diableros. I don't think I could name all the great folk I've played with, some have gone on to greater things, some have sadly ceased to be.
THIS IS GONNA BE THE LAST WAVELENGTH BEFORE IT BREAKS FOR CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR. GOT ANYTHING COOL PLANNED FOR EITHER OCCASION?
I am open to suggestions. I mean, I guess I'll probably go see my folks on Christmas, and I guess I'm working on New Years. So actually no, I guess I'm not doing anything cool, but then again, New Years I'll be working the Shit la Merde night, so maybe it'll be fun. And if I get extra beer tickets, well, then watch out ladies. I could possibly have a very good night.
I'M DJ'ING THE NIGHT YOU'RE PLAYING. ANY REQUESTS? YOU TOTALLY REQUESTED "I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU" BY LONDONBEAT ON HALLOWEEN.
Yes, yes I do. If you can, please play "The Think That Should Not Let It Be" by Beatallica
