Arietta

Arietta is rock music like it should be, wavering between screamy and melodic, with heavy guitars and the attitude of an invincible teenager. Their website (www.arietta.ca) boasts that they play a "sonic fusion of dancy rhythms, driving post-hardcore intensity, and melodic progressions." Dory Kornfeld, lusting for the days she skipped school to see punk bands play afternoon shows at the UBC ballroom, endeavoured to find out what these five boys are all about.

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
We are Arietta and we bring you music to make babies to/have a knife fight to/knit a sweater to/go sky diving to/breakdance to/play at your wedding/and definitely high-five to.

WHY DO YOU BOTHER?
Well, it's either this band or American Gladiators and considering that Sean, our 160-pound guitarist is the biggest dude in the band, being the next Laser, Turbo or Diamond is a long shot.

WHAT'S THE MOST FUN YOU'VE EVER HAD ON STAGE?
Probably a show out in Kingsville, where there was no stage but an entire crowd full of kids dancing up a storm and singing along right beside us. That, or a Halloween show we played out in London with our buddies in the now defunct VanA Primer. Everyone had sweet costumes and lost all their inhibitions. Our bassist, Ty, totally won for best costume arriving dressed as the Ultimate Warrior; it was one rad time.

WHAT MAKES YOU THE HAPPIEST ABOUT BEING A TORONTO BAND?
One: We're allowed to use the phrase "T-Dot." Two: We got to attend school with Fefe Dobson. Three: The subways stop before last call. Four: Shawn Desman. Five: The Population vs. Land Mass for touring across Canada. Six: The Yonge Blue Night bus.

...Oh you said "happiest?" Well in that case, we love that Toronto has such a tight knit community of artists who are only out to make great music and help each other out.

IF THE MEMBERS OF ARIETTA WERE OFFICE SUPPLIES WHAT WOULD YOU ALL BE?
Tyler (vocals) would be a stapler, he always holds things together and is best used when fully loaded.

Sean (guitar/vocals) would be a pencil, because he's the hardest working tool and writes most of what we do.

Brian (guitar), is a tack, although small, he's sharp and will cause pain.

Andrew (drums/keys) is a Hi-Lighter, he brightens the mood and accents the best parts.
