Clothes Make The Man
By wavelength ~ Posted Monday, April 3rd 2006Despite having a name that implies they're a band of fashion-forward metrosexuals, Ottawa's four-piece rock outfit Clothes Make the Man tell Wavelength's Tyrone Warner that the clothes don't really make the man. But apparently they think they sound like oral sex. Go figure.
WITH A BAND NAME LIKE 'œCLOTHES MAKE THE MAN,'? I HAVE TO ASK'¦ HOW DOES THE BAND DEFINE THEIR SENSE OF STYLE?
Ryan: Next question please.
WHEN DID CMTM FIRST FORM? HOW DID YOU GROW INTO YOUR SOUND?
Adam: Our sound comes from a combination of influences and our own abilities.
Ryan: CMTM formed in 2003 and we play what we think sounds good! We were brought up listening to Archers of Loaf, Neil Young, Dinosaur Jr., Weezer, The Beatles, Billy Joel, Public Enemy and most of Sugar Ray's hit singles.
WHAT IS THE POINT OF CMTM? WHAT INSPIRES THE BAND TO CREATE MUSIC?
Ryan: The initial phase of writing a song is so overwhelmingly joyous; it is a moment you want to re-create over and over.
Ross: The point of CMTM is to provide a creative outlet for us that in turn provides you, the listener, with some awesome music. We are going to make a living off of making music... which I guess is the real point of CMTM.
DOES RYAN TOTALLY LOSE HIS VOICE AFTER EVERY SHOW? IS HIS RAW VOCAL STYLE NATURAL, OR IS IT CRAFTED?
Adam: Nah. I think his vocal style is natural. It is very aligned with the music. It is also quite dynamic.
Ryan: Why thank you, Adam. We play our instruments LOUD and so my vocal 'style' came to be because I have always had to sing really fucking loud to be heard. People keep saying I'm gonna seriously wreck my throat or that I must gargle with razorblades, but shit man, I think I sound cool.
BEING FROM OTTAWA, ARE THERE THINGS FROM THE CITY THAT INSPIRE THE BAND?
Adam: Family and friends, the girls' hearts we broke and those girls who broke ours. The bottom line is Ottawa doesn't have the opportunities that Toronto does.
Scott: Although, San Marino Pizza and the Rideau Canal can be very inspiring.
DESCRIBE HOW YOUR NEW ALBUM CAME TO BE. WAS THERE ANY STRUGGLE?
Adam: This shit costs money, but we won't go there. Thinking about money is like sucking the tits of the dark lord himself.
Ryan: Patience was very hard to come by at points because we were all like 'I want people to hear this - now!'
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT THE LIVE CMTM EXPERIENCE IS LIKE?
Ryan: I have a tendency to sort of lose my mind onstage and it can be quite intense. Luckily Ross and Adam always hold it down if I get too crazy. They are solid motherfuckers. When Scott manages to stay on two feet for a whole set, he's a real bad-ass too. Recently he plummeted right THROUGH this piece of shit stage we were playing on and completely took out his guitar and my vocal mic in the process. That must have looked really fun. That was a wild show.
Ross: The CMTM live experience is like getting oral sex from someone who you'd like to get oral sex from. It is an intense affair.
WHAT IS THE COOLEST PIECE OF GEAR IN THE CMTM ARCENAL?
Scott: The bottle of Ross' urine
Adam: We are not really gear heads.
Ross: Probably the bottle of my urine we have had on the road with us for the last year.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE BAND. ANY SCOOPS?
Ryan: Adam knows a fuck load about African politics and culture. It's weird.
Ross: We are inside you right now, in our minds.
FINALLY, A SERIOUS QUESTION. LEATHER OR LACE?
Ross: This is an easy one. Leather. Why you ask? Primitive people, who lived during the Ice Age some 500,000 years ago, were likely the first to use the skins of animals to protect their bodies from the elements. Just as leather today is a by-product, our ancient ancestors hunted animals primarily for food, but once they had eaten the meat, they would clean the skin by scraping off the flesh and then sling it over their shoulders as a crude form of a coat.
Ryan: Leather for boys. Both work for girls.
Adam: I would really like to go on a dinner-date Rachel McAdams.
