Singing Saw Shadow Show

Jeff Wright asked James Anderson of the Singing Saw Shadow Show some questions, and then, as interviews often go, James answered them. There were wonderful visuals to go along with the answers, but we don't have the means to present them here. Luckily their Wavelength set will be complemented by the shadow show visuals that make them one of the most amazing live spectacles in town.

HI, JAMES! THE SINGING SAWS ARE PLAYING AT THE IMAGES FESTIVAL. WHO'S INVOLVED IN THE SHOW?

First let me say I'm sorry for not getting everyone's input into these questions. This is one-side of a ten-sided die. Then I'd like to say how amazing the people participating are: Shahin, Ian, Alex, Zeesy, Jay and Annalinda! Do you know how great it is to make music with such wonderful people every week? The best ever.

THE SINGING SAW SHADOW SHOW STARTED OFF JUST AS A BUNCH OF PEOPLE BEING TAUGHT HOW TO PLAY SAWS BY YOU, RIGHT?

And this makes me want to say: those people that started the group had such amazing patience and understanding and I love them all - except Ian Russell. I love him doubly.

WAS THE SHADOW SHOW A PART OF THE BAND FROM THE START, OR FROM AN EARLY POINT?

From the second show, the shadow show has played almost every show with us - minus five maybe.

YOU'RE RELEASING A CD SOON, WHICH WILL REMOVE THAT ELEMENT FROM THE BAND.

YES! Don't hold on Jeff!

THE SONGS ON YOUR MYSPACE PAGE ARE REALLY BEAUTIFUL, AND AREN'T HURT BY THE MISSING VISUALS AT ALL. WAS THAT SOMETHING THAT YOU WERE A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT WHEN YOU STARTED THINKING ABOUT PUTTING OUT AN ALBUM?

NOT AT ALL! The album will be a suite of songs dedicated to the 22 Oceans of the Moon. That's not true, and there aren't 22 oceans on the moon, but you understand. That's a nice thing to say! I worry about finding new shadow people (Zeesy Powers is joining us for this show with Matt Alexander) and hoping everyone shows up on Monday nights at the skate shop.

WHAT'S THE SONGWRITING PROCESS IN THE BAND?

Sagittarius and Pisces. Everyone is encouraged to write and bring ideas, and they do.

WHEN I PLAYED MY TOY PIANO WITH YOU GUYS AT TRACK AND FIELD LAST YEAR, I WAS SURPRISED BY HOW MUCH OF WHAT WAS PLAYED WAS CONDUCTED BY YOU ON THE SPOT, AS OPPOSED TO BEING A WELL-PRACTICED EXISTING SONG. I DON'T KNOW WHY THAT SURPRISED ME, AND IT SEEMED COMPLETELY NATURAL AND AWESOME, BUT I THINK BECAUSE OF HOW PRETTY THE BAND'S MUSIC IS I EXPECTED IT TO BE A MORE PRECISE OPERATION.

Those were great and beautiful sounds you were making! I like ebb and flow. I don't think we want to be a group that writes twelve songs for an album and plays the same set for a year - which is a completely fine and respectable way of making music. We rarely play the same set twice, and never more than four times in a row. Although, now we're recording twelve songs to play for a year.
