Methuselah
By wavelength ~ Posted Monday, September 4th 2006Methuselah isn't just a guy in the Bible who lives for 900 years. Not anymore. He's also a band since Don Scott, Chris Banks and Dafydd Hughes have been stirring their respective acoustic and electronic influences together like a big, ambient pitcher of frozen orange juice. They mixed their worlds together in a similar manner at the behest of interviewer, Evan Dickson.
Who are Methusulah, really?
The trio formed to play music for an art opening. Two of us were dating a couple of the artists in the show. What we came up with during that performance turned into a weird brand of glitchy ambient electronic music. We've managed to trick venues as diverse as the Rex, the Ambient Ping, Healey's and now Wavelength into letting us perform.
Where have you been all my life?
Doin' the hand jive.
I read that you sometimes plan activities for your audience. Like, you once brought board games for the crowd to play while you performed. This is interesting, since the object of most concerts is to focus as much attention as possible on the band. How do you intend people take in your music?
We formed for an art opening '“ it's always been sort of backgroundish music. It takes a long time for each improvisation to play itself out and we don't want to force people to listen to it without having something else to do. Hell, even Chris has never been able to listen through one of our recordings without falling asleep. Often our friend Rob Cruickshank bigs it up in the A/V dept., yo.
Follow-up questions: what are your favourite board games and can we expect some kind of activity hour at Wavelength?
Hi Ho Cherry-o, Cribbage, Monopoly, Scrabble, Operation, Cranium, Clue, Mastermind, Chess, Mancala (w/ beverages and dancing), Risk, Snakes & Ladders, Rubik's Cube (not a board game). Nothing at the show this time. It'll be kind of an endurance game for the audience.
Do you have any "outside" influences on your music? That is, ideas, images, or non-musical sounds that manifest somehow in your songs?
Where have you been all my life?
Even improvisors prepare before a performance, what will Methuselah do to "gear up" for the big date with Wavelength?
We will half-prepare by reprogramming all our gear, then figure out how to use it during the show, then play it during the show.
