Purveyor of: Sound spirits that live in the ear and vacation under the skin
The elder said I’d taken the appropriate dosage and after 30 minutes the Arctic night sky took on a shimmering hot pink sheen. Then I began to realize my hands were instruments for manipulating the souls of dead Norse warriors whose mighty hands pluck the strings of the harp of the universe. This harp is strung from star to star and made from the hair of many great soul-sucking beasts. It produces a dream-like sound to seduce weary travelers in the deep snow where only silence should be found.
When a small bird with the head of a child landed on his shoulder, Matt Thomas began to ask it how he could see more of such Wyrd Visions.
Members/Roll Call/Favourite Hallucinogenic?
He Who Has Wyrd Visions/Wyrd Visions (for short)/Lately it’s been Belgian waffles.
Wyrd Visions is the maximum in sonic mixture; the Montreal Mirror described your tracks as “seriously fucked-up acoustic songs.” What causes such dementia?
I’m not sure. I’m not interested in mixing this or that. Everything you hear gets in there. Absolutely everything. You can’t say, oh, I’m only influenced by a certain kind of Abyssinian music because I listened to an LP of that or something, and I’m not influenced by all the pop music I hear on the wireless when I happen to be sitting in a café and there’s something playing. Everything that you hear gets in there somewhere.
How has Nordic Black Metal affected the
songweaving of the Wyrd?
I’m not sure, but being from there, I can relate to the themes and ideas that are touched upon in that type of music.
Your new album Half-Eaten Guitar is a love letter to the abyss, but I must know: who tried to eat it and how did you fend off what surely must have been a great demon?
I don’t think anyone is trying to eat a guitar. But could you imagine it? It would probably be in a wonderworld.
With your epic song lengths and shiver-inducing noises, how were you swept into the record guild known as Bluefog?
I think it was the ice creams.
What is next on your quest and who will lie in your wake?
The next record, King, and an LP by Black Sun, which is comprised of the members of Fucked Up and me.
There are many instruments at play on Half Eaten Guitar. What sound spells do you wish to add to your spread?
Ejaculation.
What visions can we hope to see when you are conjured in the flesh for all to see?
Hopefully sex visions.
What makes these visions so specifically Wyrd?
They come from the future, of course.
