Purveyor of: Synth-pop and short sentences.
The name "Miles" means "Soldier," "Soldier of God," or "one who is devoted." The word means 5,280 feet. It's also my kick ass name. This puts The Miles on my level — something super rare. The Miles, the band, are a Toronto-based trio with a taste for energetic synth-pop with a dance flair. If they were sadder I could see them hanging out with Joy Division before the suicide, but good for them for seeing the bright side of life. On to the questions...
Can you point to one thing specifically I've done to inspire you to name your band after me?
It all started when we noticed how cool your email address was. [my email address is drsmoothmoves] The obsession deepened until one night we lay awake in the bed the three of us share, thinking of you, and the answer was clear. We must name our band "The Miles".
I'd call your sound familiar but unique — who would you say are big influences on your music?
Motown, New Wave, Surf music, 60s powerpop, Bollywood, German beer festival music, Avant-Garde polka, J-Pop, K-Pop, Secret Agent music and Kraft Dinner (tuna optional).
When your grandparents, aunts or uncles ask you what you're going to do for a living what do you say?
Play music. And if that fails, start our own meat packing business.
Do they say "How are you going to make money doing that"?
Yes. However, meat packing is a rapidly growing industry.
Does it bother you when people stand at the back of a show and don't dance?
It bothers us more when people stand at the front of the show and don't dance. Dancelessness is a problem we try to combat daily.
What's the philosophy behind your stage show?
Dress sharp. Provoke hip gyration. Maintain correct posture.
What is the plan for The Miles? Superstardom? Groupies? You can tell me, we share a name.
Find matching suits. Take over the world. Develop better eating habits... and a groupie or two would be nice.
