Purveyors of: the intricate technicalities of mental instability.
Since the release of Varge!'s album 'Must Lunge' on Edmonton's Reluctant Recordings, the band seems to be getting the attention they deserve. They're hitting up Wavelength for the second time in two years to show us big city types how it's done.
So what's the Varge story; how did you all meet and start making music?
Antoine, Mitch, Jeff... three guys from Sudbury... two brothers and another.. a brother formerly played with the other.. now they play with the other brother...
You recorded your album Must Lunge at The Hive in Vancouver, and have been seen on tour with a few Vancouver bands (The Doers, You Say Party! We Say Die!). Do you guys have a particular west coast connection?
We love Vancouver, we do great there. We recorded Must Lunge at the Hive because we wanted Jesse Gander to track and mix the album. Varge! toured with the Doers a couple times. They are the only band we've ever toured with..
How did you hook up with Edmonton's Reluctant Recordings?
We sent Evan from Reluctant a copy of Must Lunge, he loved it and offered to press some vinyl and re-release the CD version. Reluctant worked with some bands we met and befriended in the last few years and everyone had positive things to say. Must Lunge is available on 2X LP and CD from Reluctant Recordings and distributed by Scratch.
What form of religion would you say best describes the music of Varge?
Ridiculous.
Do you sing in French to be patriotic, hip or misunderstood?
We sing in French because we have French mouths.
The tempo changes and occaisional odd-time rhythms of Varge!'s music may warrant it, but would you officially call yourselves a math rock band?
We are definitely not a math rock band... We try not to categorize our music.
