Purveyor of: Low-key yet captivating ukelele ballads.
Krista Muir spent the last few years traveling the world under the guise of her faux-German alter ego, Liederhosen Lucil. She recently decided it was time to end the charade and reveal her true self. Matt Pilgrim is about to find out what happens when you stop pretending you are the reigning Ms. Oktoberfest and start being real. This is 'The Real World' with Krista Muir.
What prompted the move to start creating music under your actual name?
A shift in instrumentation...a shift in the subject matter of the songs prompted this change. I started composing songs on the baritone ukulele a few years ago, and while I love kitschy pop, I quickly realized that I didn't want to mold this new work into the LL electronic keyboard world. Plain and simple, this was something new and acoustic and I didn't feel the need to put on fake leather pants to perform it live.
Is Lucil dead forever?
Lucil is not dead! She's just sleeping for a very long time. Who knows what kind of kiss will awaken her. If she's offered her own TV show I'm sure she'll regain consciousness for the duration of the shoot at the very least. Or if Japan called up and asked her politely to come rock out in their land I doubt she would roll over and pull the covers over her head.
Most people believe Pee-wee Herman is a pervert but you consider him one of your greatest idols. Why is this?
I think people who believe Pee-wee Herman is a pervert are ignorant and need a good dose of Pee-wee's Playhouse while being fed ice cream soup (or sorbet soup if lactose intolerant). I don't think there's anything wrong with safe solo sex. And sadly "Pee-wee," a brilliantly crafted character, was put on trial for the "crime" that Paul Reubens committed. Pee Wee was innocent and everybody knew it! I think he is a comic genius; Pee-wee's Playhouse is unrivaled in the world of kids TV. He definitely inspired my Lederhosen Lucil creation. I loved the world he created where everything was alive - the fridge, the chairs, the floor... and I loved the way he incited you to scream at the TV. He took Andy Kaufman's lead and went beyond. R.I.P. Pee Wee.
If your MySpace blog is to be accepted as the truth, you've been working with Shane Watt (who will also be playing Wavelength) on the new recordings. What did he add to the mix?
Shane Watt is a humble but brilliant composer, musician, singer and master-mixer based out of Montreal. He's also a good friend and one the most generous people I have ever met. Without his support and talent it is likely Leave Alight, my new LP, would have been put on the shelf for a long time.
The album started in Toronto with the Fembots in their Junkshop it was completed in Montreal with Shane. He souped up the album with electric guitar, percussion, vocals, bass, co-produced songs, ate lots of sweets with me and mixed the entire album. We added some tracks at the end (Olga Goreas of Besnard Lakes plays flute on "Concrete Lovesong" for example) and Shane managed to make it sound as if it was always there. We're looking forward to backing each other up at the Wavelength show.
If you were randomly commisioned to create a television program with no limits on where it could go, what would it be about?
Oooooh! It would be a variety show for kids and adults alike called Tales From The Pantry hosted by Miss Lederhosen Lucil and her cast of oddball friends (including puppets of course) with a savvy environmental edge and featuring cooking, fitness, health, short film and animation segments and lots of music and dancing. Lucil would emerge from the pantry at the beginning and look into the camera and say "Guten tag everybody...Let's hose!"
