Regulars at Wavelength know Spencer Butt as the lovably lanky dude who shares the MC duties with huggably soft Doc Pickles. On September 23rd he’ll get a chance to say “Ladies and gentlemen, me!” as a he takes the stage with his new band, Lo! Evan Dickson tried to be nice to Spencer and all he got in return was a slap in the face.
 
Lo! is a brand new band that nobody knows anything about. Tell us anything about Lo!
 
Well, it’s the name of an old book about strange phenomena by this eccentric old guy named Charles Fort and it's also a really fun band featuring me and Lim and Shannon and Drew! We're a pretty rag-tag group of weirdoes and I think that's a good thing that will hopefully come through in our music.
 
Will Wavelength be your first show?

Potentially. We had one or two things lined up in advance, but you know how the indie rock scene in Toronto works, things get sketchy really quickly sometimes. As for me personally, it'll be my FIFTH motherfuckin' time being retarded on stage in one form or another and I'm pretty excited for that. Either way, brains are gonna get melted and hearts will be broken and babies will be born and a dove will get its wings and an angel will something and a whale dies or something.
 
So like, what kinds of music are you into?

Kinda all over the place. I guess like...screaming babies and the exhaling sound that braking streetcars make. Oh and art, I'm really into art all the time cuz I'm really cultured and love to art.  As for the rest of the guys, shit like F.E.A.R., James Chance, X-Ray Spex, Fugazi, Archers of Loaf, Refused, Why?, At The Drive In, Suicidal Tendencies, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum... just really crazy shit that kinda defies convention and likes to push things a little. Lots of hip hop and metal and funk and punk and blah blah ART blah.
 
Yeah that's cool. I like anything except country and rap.

Besides you, does Lo! feature any other former Secret Handsnakes?

No, just me. Daeg and Ditz are in a rad band called Stiff Count and they're great guys and I would say that eventually we'll probably be in a band together again cuz we're all so handsome. The other fellas in this band have all been in other bands though (albeit not necessarily from Toronto), so we're not as green as Mr. Evan "The Deceiver" Dickson would have you (the readers and my new friends) believe.
 
You are a funny guy, Spencer. Will Lo! songs be funny?

I guess so. Lyrically I'm doing a lot of the spoken word stuff that I do as the words for the songs and I think sometimes that runs a little melancholic. But yeah, the band’s still really fun and funny and fun to be around and handsome. We'll definitely be a lot of fun live, so everybody might as well come and see us and make good memories. How could I not be fun? HOW EVAN, DO YOU WANNA TELL ME THAT? Get off my case, Evan.
