Rough Skeleton

Purveyors of: sleeping giants

Ever feel a little overwhelmed? There’s a ton of shows going on and you've got this friend telling you to check out this awesome band and that friend telling you to check out that awesome band. You've heard this album is good and that EP is amazing and these songs will blow your mind, and after awhile you can't help but feel like you don't even know what's worth your attention. Well, let me help to clarify things a bit for you: Rough Skeleton is something you should see. Listen to the MySpace tracks, even just one, and you'll be sold. Ryan McLaren got a chance to send a few emails to Owen Marchildon about this new project.

How're you doing motherfucker?  It's been ages since I've seen you around.  What've you been up to?

Been working two jobs, too much.

How did project come together?

Well, Paul started playing keyboards in Purple Hill about a year and a half ago. We became good friends, and he had this idea for a two piece. Initially I was just going to sing over his soundscapes, then the guitars came out and we began writing songs.

So what's the physical setup for RS?

Paul plays guitar, glock, chimes, a drum machine, the saw, and various pedals. Owen plays guitar, writes words, harmonica, sings, and is in charge of hot knives.

What I've heard on MySpace sounds incredible, more akin to your Purple Hill project than From Fiction. It's pretty different from PH though. Is this a progression of that band, or do they remain two distinct projects?

No, it's not a progression of Purple Hill. They will always be separate. Rough Skeletons is the result of a creative connection which happened very quickly.

So what's going on with Purple Hill?

I'm listening to the master right now. Got it done yesterday, gonna release it very soon.

Are your math rock days behind you?

Behind me? No, no, Mr. McLaren, they're right in front of me.

How many bands have you been in your life?  Do you have the chronology down?

From Fiction, Purple Hill, Rough Skeletons.

Which was the best? Which was the worst?

Best or worst? You can't be serious.

I was hoping you'd have some hilarious story about a band you were in that you're totally embarrassed about now. Was FF really the first band you were ever in? You started out making wicked music right off the bat?

From Fiction was the first band I ever played in. Before that I was just an actor.

Two jobs and two bands? What do you do to relax?

When I relax I focus in on shooting a strike.
