Fucked Up are suing Rolling Stone and Camel Cigarettes

Fucked Up, easily one of the best hardcore bands in the universe, and Xiu Xiu are suing R. J. Reynolds Tobacco and Rolling Stone magazine for a special spread called Indie Rock Universe that profiled both bands. Apparently the spread was bookended by a giant Camel Cigarettes ad that made it look like the bands were tobacco shills. Fucked Up and Xiu Xiu are suing because they say the rag worked in cahoots with the tobacco firm on the spread. Not so says Rolling Stone. "The 'Indie Rock Universe' feature ... is not an advertisement," said spokesperson Mark Neschis in repsonse. "It was conceived and created exclusively by the editorial department, without any review by or consultation with any advertiser." Fucked Up and Xiu Xiu are pissed and are taking the mess to court. You can check out scans of the spread here.
Meanwhile a number of labels are taking a softer route and and asking for an apology from Rolling Stone for the debacle. The open letter was signed by Kill Rock Stars, 5RC, Touch and Go, and others. You can read the full letter and a bit from the guys and girl from Fucked Up at their blog.
