Some Words About.... Tonight!
By jonny ~ Posted Friday, September 24th 2010Wavelength misses you! It's been two months since our last show at the
Garrison, so we're thrilled to be back tonight - on a Friday night.
WL
507 kicks of at 9:45pm sharp with Secretary City (pictured above), a new band with a
Riot Grrl pedigree. This post-punk pop crew features ex-members of bands
like Cougar Party and Scandalnavia, who you would have heard play a lot
of Wavelengths circa 2004. Secretary City will also be playing at our first-ever Pop Montreal showcase next Saturday (Oct. 2) at Cabaret Playhouse.
Next up is Eucalyptus, a crew of
local jazzers led by alto sax fella Brodie West, who has written a bunch
of tunes inspired by the melodies of calypso music. Appropriately
enough, we first heard them on an Island - at Poor Pilgrim's Toronto
Island Show back in July. Good vibes all around.
And then...
Fond of Tigers. "Face-melting" has become an overused adjective in rock
music circles, but this Vancouver septet deserves it more so than
anyone. But there's some subtlety that goes along with all that
churning, head-scratching rhythms, and some gorgeous ambient textures,
especially with violinist Jesse Zubot on board. Their new album
Continent and Western features guests including our own Sandro Perri on
vocals - maybe this honey-voiced man will make an appearance?
Taking
you home - via a sweaty workout on the dancefloor - is MINOTAURS, the
new massive crew led by Nathan Lawr, another fine fella. Or should we
say "Fela"? That's right, these guys have soaked up plenty of Afro-beat
flavours, and as such the tunes on their new album The Thing are totally
funked-up folk-rock, if you can imagine such a, uh, thing. With members
of King Cobb Steelie filling out the rhythm section with labyrinthine
beats (sorry, couldn't resist) and horn players like Jeremy Strachan and
Steve Ward up front, you know that this is going to be an awesome time.
General Chaos, as always, brings the Visuals.
Admission, as per tradition, is pay what you can.
Door are at 9, and we, as ever, look forward to seeing you!
