Isla Craig's Open Space Drooooooooooooooone!

One of my favorite voices in the community, the indefatigable Isla Craig, known for her beautiful voice and songs, can now call herself a proper art curator. She has put together an amazing November of fun, beautiful, and thought provoking music/art as part of the Open Space series at 401 Richmond.  This Thursday's installation: Drones!

Open Voice Series: Overtone / Drone Zone

Admission (per event): $15 / $5 students & arts workers Ivy Mairi was born and raised on Ward's Island and grew up singing with her mother and sister. A natural affinity for the traditional music of Appalachia and the British Isles influences the contemporary songwriting of this joy-carrying young woman. Ivy's 2007 debut album Well You, was produced by Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies). She is currently working on a new record with her trio to be released in 2011. With a rare and captivating voice, Isla Craig is a song crafter of smooth sailing melody, and trance like meanderings. Inspiration comes to her in the paradoxical forms of early vocal music, R &B, and an all-encompassing habitation dwelling deeply within the sanctuary of sound. Isla is an active live performer, both solo and with her band The Continental Drift (Mike Smith, Colin Fisher, and Brandon Valdivia). She is also a member of the low-fi trip hop inspired duo, The Deeep. Scott Peterson throat sings, plays double bass, African mbira, Tuvan igil, and leads a wierd and wonderful band called Prince Enoki's Insect Orchestra. After accidentally discovering how to throat sing in a shaman's hut in Peru, he travelled to the Republic of Tuva in Siberia to study with master throat singer Sergei Ondar. Scott received a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Studies, from the University of Calgary, studied Double Bass with John Patitucci in New York City, and attended the Banff Centre for Performing Arts. He is grateful to have received grants from the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and Butterfield & Robinson.
