Happy Hipster Christmas!

Happy Hipster Christmas a.k.a. Halloween a.k.a. the time of year that overgrown adolescents use a kid's holiday as an excuse to dress like a (non-gender specific) skank and find an excuse to talk to strangers! Everyone wins / gets laid! And don't forget to throw in a plethora, nay, a death-ora of monster puns... just to balance out the sexiness with some geekiness (as if the two are mutually exclusive or something).

As usual, there's no shortage of music-related activities this weekend. And much like Easter, it's probably about time we moved Hipster Christmas to the Saturday before Oct. 31st, and let the kids have their candy-haul-iday back. Here's Wavelength's wraithly wreckommendations (yuk yuk)....

Tonight (Friday Oct. 26)

• The ghoul-daddy of Trauma, Onterrible Halloween parties, Monster Mash has been going for eight years straight thanks to the '50s-lovin' hepcats at Goin' Steady. Always a good time. The Monster Mash crew promises to "once again transform Lee's into a frightening array of spooky projections and multimedia mayhem." Lee's Palace, 529 Bloor St. W. 9pm, $10 (door only).

The Garrison has a "Video Dance Party" - I recall those being traumatic in their own way back in high school in the '90s - with DJs Scott Cudmore, Shit LaMerde and Finkelstein! The Garrison, 1197 Dundas St. W. 9:30pm, $10.

• And what? There's also a "SHIT FUN Video Dance Party" at Double Double Land - but it looks like this one is little less MuchMusic and a bit more Video ART! They promise "A/V/Electro/Acid/Okkult/ Industrial/DeathDisco/ PostPunk/PowerNoise/NoWave/ Breakcore" with the likes of Jubal Brown and Sins. Double Double Land, 209 Augusta Ave. $10 door / $5 with costume.

• And our favourite party band, Catl are throwing their Halloween party tonight in T.O. at their usual haunt, The Dakota - and tomorrow night in Guelph at Jimmy Jazz. Dakota Tavern, 249 Ossington Ave., Toronto. Jimmy Jazz, 52 MacDonell Ave., Guelph. 10pm both nights. $TBA at the Dakota, Jimmy Jazz usually free.

Tomorrow (Saturday Oct. 27)

• "Ghost Hole" should be the new slagoff for Hipster Xmas Humbugzzkillers. You can call us that if you want, given our uncharacteristic level of snark today! Ghost Hole IV: 2012 Island Edition is also the name of the first-ever Halloween event happening at Artscape Gibraltar Point, where Wavelength hosts our ALL CAPS! Island Festival every summer. Curated by Vanessa Rieger of White House and WhipperSnapper fame, the fourth annual Ghost Hole features 30+ exhibiting artists and over six musical performances, from the likes of Maloo (a.k.a. Maylee Todd), Jal, Processor and Nick Flanagan. Transplanted from past downtown venues to the spooky and possibly haunted former public school house on Skull, I mean, Toronto Island, Ghost Hole IV really should be worth taking a ferry ride across  black, mist-covered waters for. Artscape Gibraltar Point, 443 Lake Shore Road, Toronto Island (20 min walk from Hanlan's Point ferry). 2pm to midnight, $12 adv at Soundscapes. Special Ghost Ship ferry schedule here!

• And speaking of holes (ewww).... We're considering making the trek (okay, more like a 15 minute subway ride) to the East End for "The Damnforth Invitational," a Halloween Party at a poolhall on the Danforth with some of our favourite zombie-slaying post-punk rawk bands in town: The Two Koreas, Town Ship and This Mess (the latter of whom feature Wavelength's own production manager & junior programmer, Adham Ghanem on drums)! The Academy, 485 Danforth Ave. 8pm, $7.

• Back in the rotten city core, "Best Concept Party" Award goes to Death to T.O. 2, the Halloween Covers Show, in which a bunch of your favourite Toronto bands dress up as - and play songs by - their favourite bands. Guns 'n' Roses played by Vag Halen! The Germs played by The Soupcans! Nirvana played by Rituals! Nine Inch Nails played by Hellaluya! The Damned played by Ell V Gore! Drunk sweaty mess played by drunk sweaty mess! The Silver Dollar & Comfort Zone (both floors), 486 Spadina Ave. 9pm, $10 w/ costume, $15 without.

• And for a completely different type of "scary," don't miss Christof Migone's "Hit Parade" - taking place at 6pm in OCAD's Butterfield Park as part of the 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art. "Participants lie face down on the ground where they proceed to pound the pavement with the microphone one thousand times. The sound of each person’s actions is amplified. Each performer chooses their own rhythm and intensity. They take a pause at every hundred of whatever length they wish." W. T. F. Butterfield Park, next to OCAD, 100 McCaul St. 6pm, FREE.
