Wavelength warms up winter with the 14th annual “Wavelength Music Festival” running from February 13 to 16, 2014 in downtown Toronto, Canada. #WL14 is a four-night live curated mixtape of the best independent music coming out of Canada (and the US) in 2014. This year’s line-up includes Colin Stetson (Polaris Music Prize nominee), Marnie Stern, DIANA, Cousins, Phèdre, TOPS, US Girls, The Wet Secrets and Odonis Odonis, among many others (complete listings below.)
Tickets for the festival are priced individually (see listings below) and range from $10 to $25. An all access festival pass is now available for sale online at ticketfly.com for $49 and will be available in Toronto at Rotate This (801 Queen Street West, Toronto) and Soundscapes (572 College Street, Toronto) as of December 19, 2013.
Festival highlights include a showcase at Adelaide Hall with female guitar shredder Marnie Stern and Buzz Records’ Odonis Odonis and Weaves for a Red Bull-presented showcase; a Weird Canada co-presented evening at unique alternative space the Polish Combatants Hall headlined by two-time Polaris Prize short-listed saxophonist Colin Stetson; a collaboration with indie electronic blog Silent Shout co-headlined by Toronto’s Phèdre and Montreal’s TOPS; and what will be a triumphant finish by Halifax’s epic indie-rock duo, Cousins.
Wavelength Music Festival FOURTEEN features main-stage concerts taking place at a different, specially selected venue each night, featuring uniquely curated visuals and art installations. Additionally, the festival also includes free programming taking place in local indie record stores. These all-ages-accessible in-stores include two events: a launch for crucial national music blog Weird Canada’s new distribution service and a discussion entitled “The Toronto Music Moment” featuring local music industry insiders, alongside Toronto city councillor Josh Colle, discussing the explosion of global interest in music from Toronto. Each talk is followed by a free concert featuring 416-based talent.
Evolving from its humble beginnings as a weekly indie music concert series that brought the world important early gigs by Broken Social Scene, Owen Pallett and Fucked Up, Wavelength now presents ambitious festivals and special events all year round. With the recent support of an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, 2014 sees Wavelength expanding its operations and diversifying its programming. Always committed to championing emerging and original talent, this non-profit arts organization remains one of Toronto’s leading tastemakers — at a time when the rest of the world is discovering Toronto music in a big way.
Wavelength Music Festival FOURTEEN is supported by Red Bull Canada, new broadcast partner Indie 88 FM, Ontario Trillium Foundation, The Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, The SOCAN Foundation, Steam Whistle Brewing, Autoshare, Blog TO and Exclaim.
