DIY Resource: Artists' Legal Advice Services

ALAS (Artists’ Legal Advice Services) is a free legal advice service operating out of 401 Richmond, a beautiful building and creative hub located at the corner of Richmond and Spadina. For more than 10 years, ALAS has been providing musicians, artists, and creators with legal advice on a range of topics. Maybe you have questions about a contract you’re contemplating signing, or are worried about the implications of a licensing agreement. You might be unsure of how to deal with a manager who won’t pay you what was promised after a tour, or you might want clarification regarding your rights to a song written in collaboration with another artist. The entertainment lawyers at ALAS will address your concerns during a 30-minute session and outline your best next steps. If further legal action is required and you need to hire paid legal representation, the lawyers can provide you with a list of practitioners in Toronto who can provide further assistance.

Access to ALAS isn’t limited to those who live in the GTA. If you’re an Ontario resident and aren’t able to make it into the city for an appointment, lawyers will be happy to conduct your meeting via telephone.

The service is staffed by lawyers who donate their time and is organized by volunteer law students from the University of Toronto. Though not required, donations of $20 per appointment are recommended and greatly appreciated as they help to keep the service running smoothly. ALAS is open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:00 pm. To book an appointment, call 416-367-2527. For more info, check out www.alasontario.ca or email alasontario@gmail.com
